Definition

CDC definition: See Figure 1.

IDSA definition

Asymptomatic bacteriuria: Refers to bacteria growing in the urine (greater than 105 CFU/mL)

without signs and symptoms associated with UTIs

ii.

Catheter-associated symptomatic bacteriuria: In patients with indwelling urethral, indwelling

suprapubic, or intermittent catheterization (or condom catheter in a man), defined by the

presence of 105 CFU/mL or greater of 1 or more bacterial species in a single catheter urine

specimen in a patient without symptoms compatible with a UTI
